“My main job is recruitment” – Interview with Montserrat Coach Matt Lockwood

The link below is to an interview with Matt Lockwood, Montserrat’s new Head Coach, which took place on the Essex-based radio station Pheonix FM on 25th January. The five minutes about Montserrat start at 45 minutes in, and it seems to be the first public announcement of his appointment. He said that he had been lined up for the job for a while and was at Donachie’s last matches in charge last summer. He’s also been to Montserrat a couple of times since.

Given some of the comments on my previous posts about his appointment, I suspect that some of what he said will disappoint people, particularly about his priority being to persuade more players from England to agree to play for the team. After the interview, the studio team discuss some of the players he has already contacted and their responses.

Lockwood never announced an assistant, and with George Dublin now coaching the Antigua and Barbuda national team, the coaching situation in Montserrat is unclear. Lockwood is doing this alongside his full-time job with Puma.

He sounds a bit naive to be honest, but let’s give him a chance. He is highly thought of, and this is a big chance for him. His first game is against Haiti, one of the best teams in the Caribbean, but Montserrat can’t be promoted or relegated this season so the pressure is off. But I’d say his aim for next season should be promotion to League A. The recent change in the tournament structure helps Montserrat this year, but it also means that if we want more games against the likes of Haiti and El Salvador, League A is the place to be.
